Did you have a look at the picture above? It’s quite a sad sight, isn’t it? Rubbish and land fill as far as the eye can see and many of us are adding to it by using plastic bags without a second thought. I used to be the same. Whenever I was offered a carrier bag in a supermarket, I happily took it off the cashier’s hand. You always need plastic bags, right? For your dirty knickers when you go traveling, for your kitchen rubbish, dog poo and lots of other things. They are handy little things, but unfortunately they are equally nasty.
Just look at the following facts that Lush Cosmetics has collected:
• Plastic bags are rubbish and in the EU we create more than 800,000 tonnes of plastic bag waste each year
• Use of plastic bags in the UK has gone up this year to over 8 billion single use carrier bags produced
• These plastic bags will litter our environment for over 2,000 years – polluting our seas, our cities, our countryside and killing our wildlife
But luckily, it’s not inevitable! In countries where a ban or 5p charge has been introduced plastic bag use has typically dropped over 95% and Lush support the Break the Bag Habit campaign and ask the Government to implement a 5p charge following the model introduced in Wales. With this model retailers would be required by law to charge 5p for bags with all profits from the charge going to local environmental charities! In Germany you pay even more and I know that all my family use eco-friendly bags for their shopping, which is something I have introduced in our household over the last couple of years.
If you want to teach your children more about the downside of plastic bags, why not do it the creative way? Lush Cosmetics are hosting two great competitions with lots of fab Lush goodies up for grabs. Bury the Bag Monster is a drawing competition that asks your little ones to draw their own Bag Monster whereas the Bag Adventure competition wants children to tell Lush where they think plastic bags go when we throw them away. We will definitely be getting involved! So keep your eyes pealed for our entries. If you want more information on the Terms and Conditions, simple click on the links above. They will lead you to the Lush website and give you all the details you need!
Disclosure: I didn’t receive any payment for this post. I am simply sharing this with you, because I like the idea behind the competitions and thought you might like to get involved!
