You know how it is with New Year’s resolutions: You are motivated and enthusiastic for the first two or three weeks of the year and work hard to achieve your goals and as soon as you are back into your everyday routine, you’ve forgotten all about your good intentions. I know what I am talking about: I am a real expert when it comes to failing my New Year’s resolutions and that is why I have started to make a change as soon as things annoy me.
Last year in autumn, we made the decision to waste less electricity and gas and with British Gas smart meters saving gas couldn’t be easier. The smart meters by British Gas help transform your relationship with energy. They come with a handy smart energy monitor that shows exactly the energy you’re using. Gas and electricity consumption is shown in pounds & pence, kWh/CO2 and can be tracked overtime. The smart meters replace your current gas and electricity meters and put you in control of your energy use so that you can be more efficient. The UK Government, along with others around the world, has committed to reduce energy usage and has set a target for all UK homes to have a smart meter by 2019. The accuracy that smart meters provide lets us forecast energy use throughout the day, across the country. This means we can become more efficient in how we generate the nation’s power, producing cleaner, greener electricity.
Traditionally, meters sit under your stairs or in the garage and are only disturbed when the meter reader comes to take a reading. Well, at first sight, British Gas smart meters don’t look a whole lot different…but are worlds apart. Like their conventional cousins, they still sit in infrequently visited locations, but now they’re not even disturbed by meter readers. This is because these clever devices communicate to an in-home display unit (a Smart Energy Monitor), giving you an instant view of your energy consumption for both gas and electricity allowing you to cut back and save valuable pounds.
As part of their on-going commitment to customers, British Gas commissioned Oxford Economics to investigate how valuable smart meters can be for British families and I have to say, I am impressed. The results were extremely positive and will give each household an average saving of around £65 per year. British homes and businesses could be nearly £14 billion better off thanks to the roll out of smart meters, which is an amazing saving, if you ask me.
If you want to save money on your electricity and gas, you can pre-register for a smart meter and read about them in more detail here. For more detailed information, you can read the entire report or chat to experts on the British Gas Website or Facebook and Twitter. This fab video, will give you a first idea too.
