Certain trends come and go and turn out to be little more than a flash in the pan. Others though have real staying power and never seem to fall out of fashion. Here, we take a look at three iconic garments that have stood the test of time and look just as good now as they did when they first became famous.
1. The classic miniskirt
Initially launched into the limelight by models like Jean Shrimpton, the miniskirt is a true fashion legend. Before the 1960s, these short skirts would have seemed scandalous to many, but attitudes were changing and it didn’t take long for the above-the-knee look to catch on. Early designs from the likes of Emilio Pucci often featured bold colour combinations and intriguing geometric patterns. If you love this look, one of the best ways to get hold of authentic ‘60s minis is to check out vintage clothing retailers. Whether retro or bang up to date, these skirts can look stunning dressed down with casual tops and flats or glammed up with elegant evening accessories and knee-high boots or killer heels.
2. Baby-doll dresses
Baby-doll dresses are another timeless choice. The first examples were created by designer Sylvia Pedler in the 1940s, but they didn’t make the fashion bigtime until the ‘60s and ‘70s. Characterised by their short length, floaty skirts, high necks and long-sleeves, they’ve continually been reinvented on the catwalk and been worn by a host of celebs. From Twiggy to the character Megan from Mad Men, the baby-doll has adorned many a fashion lover. The dresses are still the epitome of elegance and sophistication, and they look great teamed up with knee-length boots or chunky heels.
3. The jumpsuit
It might have been invented as a practical ensemble for aviators, parachutists and skydivers, but the jumpsuit has become a firm favourite among fashionistas across the world. Initially popularised by Elvis, the look was appropriated by designers of female fashion and from the ‘60s onwards a range of suit styles have been created.
They made their biggest splash in the ‘80s when they entered the world of high fashion. From halter jumpsuits to trouser rompers, there are now a host of looks to choose from and stars including Britney Spears, Aaliyah, the Kardashian sisters and Pink have all made appearances in them. These classic garments can work especially well when paired with stylish jackets to break up the look and create a more subtle overall effect.
If you want to buy clothes that you can wear season after season, you won’t go far wrong with these three iconic choices.
