For many people Christmas-time is all about the home. It’s where we unwrap our presents, curl up together around the fire, reminisce on the year past and entertain friends and family. For that reason, we like our home to look picture perfect – especially in the living room. This guide tells you how to make your living room perfect for the festive season.
The centrepiece – your Christmas tree
Real or artificial? This is the question. Surely there’s nothing as Christmassy as the smell of a bona-fide Christmas tree? Ok, so they take a bit looking after but are well worth the effort. But whatever you decide to go with, decorate your tree with sumptuous ornaments, ribbons, Christmas stockings and lights.
Consider a small side table next to your tree to store assortments on – extra ornaments, Christmas candles, a bowl of nuts, that kind of thing.
Consistent palette
Don’t stop at the tree. Using the same tone for all your decorations is really effective – it helps create a consistent atmosphere around your house. Green, red, white and wood are all fantastic Christmas colours.
Coffee book table
A coffee book table should take pride of place in the living room. Adorn a coffee book table with some Christmas coffee, festive biscuits, cards and presents. It’ll be the place you open your presents come Christmas morning.
Go vintage
For a proper Christmas feel, fill your living room with old trinkets and vintage furniture. Take a trip to your local market, antiques store or bric-a-brac shop to see what you can find.
Decorate the fireplace
As well as Christmas stockings, candles and festive ornaments, decorate your fireplace with a garland running right across the mantelpiece.
Of course, your living room should be just the start. Ensure your whole house is fully kitted out for Christmas so you have the best experience possible.

I’m afraid we use the same decorations each year but always get a real tree. This will be our third baby’s first Christmas so we’ll make it as exciting and snuggly as possible. I do like bunting so i’ll make some christmas bunting this year and will get the kids to draw Christmas pictures to put up on the wall. It may not be super stylish but it’ll be warm and welcoming.
Some good tips. I bought some new tinsel yesterday with a colour scheme in mind for this year and I’m feeling all festive now.
Thanks, some great ideas there. I’ve just treated myself to some lovely Christmas cushions this year.
Great tips I tend to share with friends as we swap our decorations and dining pieces especially most of the ring when we redecorate we tend to have similar colours.I like it to match colour scheme.
Great tips. Don’t forget that if you live near the right kind of trees you can pick up lots of pine cones, or find small broken branches – they can be sprayed silver and used in a centrepiece, and all over the house to give a sense of unified decoration.
Some good tips here! I wish my living room looked beautiful but I am on the minimalist side so tend to ‘under decorate’ . I would love a white tree with all white and silver decorations though.
Some great tips thank you.
