It was my birthday on Sunday and as the weather had been absolutely miserable and I’m not really a fan of parties, all I wanted was to spend a nice day out in the country. Burg Schlitz is a beautiful 19th-century castle and a bit of a hidden treasure here in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The estate is around 30 km away from us and just the place for long walks in absolute peace and quiet.

It is owned by hotelier couple Manuela und Armin Hoeck and centres around a luxurious 5-star hotel and restaurant. Both are regularly recognised with the most prestigious awards in the hotel and gastronomy industry. In 2012, the hotel was even awarded ‘Hotel of the Year’. Pretty impressive considering the number of hotels out there, don’t you think? As I live nearby, I’ve unfortunately never stayed overnight but if you fancy a look at the rooms, why don’t you go on a virtual tour of the hotel?
Burg Schlitz is surrounded by 450 acres of landscaped park. It includes hunting grounds, 3 lakes as well as bridle paths with natural jumps. The parkland invites for picnics and long strolls and this is exactly what we did on Sunday. Autumn had painted the trees in the most beautiful colours, so I couldn’t resist getting my camera out. Here are some of my snapshots.

It was Amy’s first visit to the estate and I think she didn’t know what to explore first. All over the estate, you find gorgeous monuments remembering former owners and their loved ones.
We collected leaves and conkers. Amy even tasted and has found her new favourite snack it seems.
Amy hid under rocks, danced around the fountain and loved her little autumn adventure. I can’t wait to come back in winter when everything’s covered in snow. The restaurant also does a delicious hot chocolate that’s a must during the colder months!
